This week in ISM, I made progress in preparing for both my final product and research showcase. I discovered a new source of secondary research through access to MEDtube. This platform provides videos of various surgeries and I was able to find one on pediatric cataract surgery. The process was extremely fascinating to watch and helped me put a visual of the “real deal” to what I have learned about the surgery. The video has taught me about the specific steps of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC), the approach used in this surgery. I am able to see how the capsule is removed and the IOL is implanted. Additional aspects of pediatric cataract surgery like the elasticity of pediatric eyes and how the CCC is adjusted throughout the tear are seen. Overall, I greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to see an actual pediatric cataract surgery and find the whole process interesting and educational to watch. I plan to continue to explore MEDtube to watch various pediatric ophthalmology procedures. This video contributes to my final product plan, which I made a proposal for this week, as it involves pediatric cataract surgery. I am planning to create a 3D model of the components involved in pediatric cataract surgery and demonstrate how the surgery progresses in steps, which would allow for the surgery to be more easily understood. This will be challenging to accurately depict but I am excited to create a more interactive product that can help the pediatric ophthalmology field. As my research showcase approaches, I have made preparations through drafting an invite and purchasing a board. I look forward to planning this display board this coming week.
