Throughout this week, I have completely focused on finishing my original work. As I continued writing, I had to find additional sources to help elaborate on the topics discussed. I spent much time compiling research to form cohesive and complex recommendations regarding pediatric ophthalmology conditions. This involved a further look into many ideas that caught my attention through my interviews, one being the impacts of the bevacizumab injection used for ROP, which involved neurodevelopmental risks. I was able to connect its benefits with what I learned about VEGFs for the previous section, showing me an example of the medication that could help with ROP. Additionally, I further explored the role differences in adult and pediatric ophthalmology make in cataracts through IOL power calculation and PCO treatment. These topics I researched could all be better addressed through further research and I worked to highlight these specific areas in which research could benefit the field. I also covered different recommendations for technology and programs, which are modern developments that fascinate me in their potential. My original work experience has taught me the value of taking many different sources and topics to come together for a combined message, which, in this case, was addressing the needs of the pediatric ophthalmology field. Overall, the variety of topics allowed me to learn about a wide range of aspects of pediatric ophthalmology and connect them all to my goal of helping to expand research for the field. I am excited to continue to apply the knowledge I have gained to my ISM journey as I begin mentor visits and explore ideas for a final product.
