This week, I was able to have another mentor visit with Dr. Thayer. I had the opportunity to see a model she has of an eye with a cataract, which turned out to be extremely helpful in teaching me about pediatric cataract surgery. As this is similar to what I am aiming for in my final product, it was great to be able to better picture the pediatric cataract. Additionally, Dr. Thayer helped me better understand the entire process of pediatric cataract surgery with this 3D model. As she discussed the steps, I was able to picture how this applies to a model, as I could see how the different parts worked together and the precise location of different steps, and ask questions accordingly. I cleared up many confusions about the process of pediatric cataract surgery, specifically vitrectorhexis, through this mentor visit. Dr. Thayer also showed me an actual IOL lens, which was extremely fascinating to see. I also discussed with Coach Goff ways to present a model as a final product to better plan for how I wish to approach it. I am looking for ways to make my model both unique and helpful to pediatric ophthalmology. Also, the research showcase was rescheduled due to inclement weather, so it will be this week. I look forward to sharing my work and seeing other ISM students’ work!
