This week, I continued to research pediatric cataract surgery in depth by looking into the research of a wide variety of techniques used for anterior capsulotomy. I was able to compare the different approaches used in each technique to see the benefits and risks of each, broadening my understanding of cataract surgery. I learned about can opener capsulotomy, envelope capsulotomy, more technology-based techniques like femto second laser-assisted capsulotomy, and more. The article I read also provided visuals of these techniques, which highlighted to me the differences in incisions of the anterior capsule. I also learned more about how the uniqueness of pediatric cataracts from adult cataracts affected the effectiveness of a technique. This is due to the traits of anterior lens capsules, which reinforces to me how pediatric ophthalmology needs unique attention. I was introduced to the two incision push-pull (TIPP) technique, among others. I hope to research this spectrum of techniques more to best identify which technique I should use for my final product. I am planning on having my first mentor visit soon and am excited to gain a better understanding of the surgery from Dr. Thayer's insight. I will complete my display board this coming week in preparation for the research showcase. With these different areas of my ISM journey, there is much progress to be made and learning to be done in the process.
